week 10

"Freeze Motion"

"Blur Motion"

Subject: "Dinner"

Research

Derriere la Gare Saint-Lazare, 1932 - Henri Cartier-Bresson

One of Cartier-Bresson's most famous images, a man is seen jumping over a puddle. However cliché this type of photograph is, Cariter-Bresson brings a new, fresh sense to it. Conveying several photographic conventions, this image captures the moment with unbelievable detail. From harshness of the wrought iron fence contrasting with the softness of the ripples from the ladder.
The individual is caught mid motion jumping over the puddle resulting in blur.

Further Development - "Identity Revealed"

In this series of photographs i experimented with different lighting techniques similar to the video posted with the David Bate text notes. My objective for this shoot was to capture the individual in their natural environment.

Research - Ann Shelton

In Shelton's series titled, "Room Room" she transforms these once personal spaces into mere documents of emptiness. As these images are all quite similar the viewer attempts to distinguish differences within them and often over analyse in order to suggest meaning in the image. For example in this image we can see a halo effect the lighting from the window is giving off. Paired with the door handle that resembles a cross we can make our interpretations of the image.

The rounded edges of the image reflect a sense of invitation into the room and take away the harshness from eeriness of emptiness. This however contradicts the geometric perpendicular axes of the interior space.

Shelton seemed to be an appropriate artist to look into with this series, after my own investigations with my "empty containers" work

week 9

"Shoot through another frame"
Subject: "Lunch"
Concept: "Selfie"

Research

Tori Trigg, Woodhill, 2011 -

This image is from a collaborative book titled, "Smoke & Mirrors." A series of fashion photography images that reflect a very glamorous nature. In this particular image we see a model standing in a forest taken with a short depth of field, the area of interest is clearly the face. The model is shot with a concerned face, which is only heightened by the lighting used. Strong highlights and consequently strong shadows are a result of low angle lighting which contours the cheekbone and upper brow. A stark profile is given from strong backlighting.
